Seville is one of the best cities in Spain to watch the music and dance of flamenco. So important to the city of Seville is flamenco that a new museum is schedule to open its doors in late 2005. One of the principal tourist attractions in the city, flamenco has also encouraged the development of several venues offering nightly performances. ![]() While technically not tablaos, two of the best venues with affordable prices are Casa de la Memoria in Santa Cruz and Casa Carmen Arte Flamenco in Arenal. At Casa de la Memoria the show takes place in an 18th century patio and has limited seating. Casa Carmen Arte Flamenco, on Marques de Parada, provided us with an excellent performance in an even smaller, more intimate atmosphere. The shows in these establishments are less choreographed and more improvised, featuring different dancers and routines each night. Many of the artists who perform in these smaller venues also perform in the tablaos. |

PHOTO REPORTS![]() INFORMATION: The city tourist office on Avenida de la Constitución often lists flamenco shows in bars and cultural associations. SOME RECOMMENDED BARS: Lo Nuestro c/ Betis, 31 Casa Anselma c/ Pagés del Corro, 49 La Carboneria c/ Levies, 18 El Tamboril Plaza de Santa Cruz | |||
One of the most interesting ways to enjoy flamenco is in a neighborhood bar or cultural association. These often improvised performances provide a more intimate atmosphere in which one can relax and see the activity up close. ![]() Perhaps the best area for live flamenco in the bars is across the river in Triana. The neighborhood has a rich tradition of singers and musicians, and it is quite common to see small plaques dedicated to an artist who once resided in a particular house. In the many flamenco bars of the Triana quarter you will see locals as well as tourists enjoying the performances. Some locations will be more dedicated to the regional style of sevillanas, distinguished by it's unique timing, rhythm and style. Most women from the city have grown up dancing sevillanas, with much practice from the yearly Feria de Abril. Other common styles of flamenco music heard in the bars are rumba, alegria and buleria. If you are not able to make it to Triana there are also several bars scattered throughout the center of Seville where you can watch live music or even dance. |
